For my gestalt exercise I thought about ways to incorporate smaller pieces to create a whole bigger than its parts, and for that I chose to repeat music notes in order to create a portrait. I thought about doing a portrait of a scientist using small drawn molecules or of a musician using small notes. I settled on the latter and did a portrait of Beethoven using a lot of repeated sixteenth notes. If you look close enough you can see all of the notes standing out from each other. I started the portrait in Illustrator, but decided that doing it in Photoshop would be easier. I made a custom brush on Photoshop and sampled the colors from Joseph Karl Stieler’s portrait of Beethoven to match the feel of the original. I quite liked the way that it turned out, and it was a really good refresher for certain areas I have grown rusty in.
